AviaPark Shopping Centre
1/ 12
Aviapark Shopping Centre is one of Moscow's largest shopping and entertainment complexes, located on Khodynsky Field. The architectural solution was developed by the international bureau Callison in collaboration with ABD Architects. The large-scale volume of the complex is built on a combination of transparent entrance zones, expansive solid planes and an extensive metal envelope.
Perforated pre-painted aluminium plays an important role in the facade architecture. The ventilated facade is formed from aluminium cassette panels, which create an even yet visually light surface and help manage the very large length of the building.
Perforation makes the metal planes less monolithic and adds depth to them. Depending on the distance and lighting, the facade is perceived differently: from a distance it appears as a unified light envelope, but as you approach, the pattern of apertures becomes visible, along with the rhythm of cassettes and the play of light on the metal surface.
The contrast between aluminium and glass is especially important. Transparent sections mark entrances and public spaces, while the metal cladding forms the main mass of the building. This combination allows the enormous volume of the shopping centre to be visually structured and makes its architecture appear lighter.
At Aviapark, aluminium functions primarily as a material of scale and rhythm. The perforated envelope unites the extensive facades into a unified composition while maintaining a sense of depth, light and surface variation.
