Platov International Airport
1/ 6
Platov International Airport — a passenger terminal in Rostov Region, whose architectural concept was developed by the British practice Twelve Architects. The main theme of the project is the image of the Don River: smooth wave-like rooflines and large spans form a dynamic silhouette that evokes the movement of water and bridges.
Pre-painted aluminium plays a key role in realising this idea. The curved roof is executed using industrial standing seam technology and becomes the main sculptural element of the building. The metal surface literally assembles the terminal's architectural image, emphasising the smoothness of its lines and the breadth of the composition.
The roof uses S.Con aluminium and the S.Falz INDUSTRIAL system. The light metallic shade enhances the resemblance to a water surface: in overcast weather the aluminium appears calmer and more matte, while in sunlight it reveals bright silvery reflections.
The roof works especially expressively in combination with the glazed elements of the terminal. A longitudinal skylight approximately eight metres wide cuts across the metal surface, floods the interior with natural light and simultaneously separates the zones for international and domestic departures.
As a result, metal here becomes not merely a roofing material, but the primary instrument of architectural form. The curved aluminium standing seam conveys the water theme, emphasises the building's movement and creates the airport's distinctive silhouette.
