Gumrak International Airport
1/ 6
Gumrak International Airport is Volgograd's airport, whose development included the construction of new passenger terminals and infrastructure modernisation in preparation for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The new international terminal was commissioned in 2016 and became an important part of the upgraded airport complex.
The terminal architecture combines large glazed surfaces, clear geometry, and metal elements. The main facade projects a contemporary transport aesthetic, while the roof and technical zones are designed with functional restraint.
One of the project's key materials was aluminium. The terminal employed industrial standing seam technology, which created a reliable metal roof designed for complex operational conditions and large surface areas.
The material was particularly significant on the roof, where ventilation, air purification, and air conditioning equipment is located. The structure operates under constant moisture exposure and condensation formation. Corrosion-resistant aluminium was therefore selected, well-suited to such engineering demands.
Industrial standing seam creates a smooth, unified metal surface that visually emphasises the terminal's length. Aluminium functions not only as a technical solution but also as an architectural element—connecting complex engineering infrastructure with the building's clean, contemporary character.
As a result, metal becomes integral to the airport's functional logic: lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and suitable for large roofing surfaces, aluminium ensures structural reliability while reinforcing the contemporary character of the transport complex.
