Solntsevo station of the Moscow Metro — a station on the Solntsevskaya Line, opened in 2018. The architectural concept was developed by NEFA Architects under the direction of Dmitry Ovcharov. The project won an international competition and is built around a simple yet expressive idea — to fill an underground space with the sensation of sunlight.

The station interior is designed predominantly in light tones. White surfaces, soft diffused light and individual yellow accents create a sense of space that literally glows from within. The main visual impression is formed not by direct decorative quotations, but by the interaction of light with the architecture itself.

One of the key materials is pre-painted aluminium S.Con. It clads the ceilings, columns and curved pillars of the station. The light matte metallic surface produces virtually no sharp reflections and helps distribute artificial lighting evenly throughout the station.

A special solution was developed for the ceiling: circular openings were made in the aluminium panels, behind which light shafts are positioned. Thanks to reflected light, they are perceived as sunspots passing through the ceiling surface. This technique is continued on the walls and other interior elements, forming a unified light pattern.

As a result, at Solntsevo, aluminium becomes one of the main tools of the architectural concept. Its matte surface, perforations and interaction with reflected light create an unusual effect for a metro station — a light, airy space where the boundary between material and lighting practically disappears.
