Almaty Hotel
1/ 9
Almaty Hotel is one of the iconic monuments of Soviet modernism in the city centre. Built in 1967, the building is instantly recognizable by its gently curved facade, which has been compared both to the mountain ridge line of the Zailiysky Alatau and to a drawn bow. The architectural character is formed by horizontal bands of windows, loggias, and the interplay of light and shadow across the extended facade surface.
The original project was created by architects N.I. Ripinsky, I.A. Kartasi, A.Y. Kossov, and V.G. Chirkin. During the subsequent renovation, the primary goal was to restore the building's historic expressiveness while adapting it to contemporary standards. The concept for the facade update was developed by the British firm Chapman Taylor.
Pre-painted aluminium became one of the key materials for the renovation. The light metal cladding helped restore a cleaner and more unified character to the facade, emphasize its long horizontal lines, and move away from the heavy visual solutions of previous renovations.
Combined with glass, the aluminium makes the building visually lighter and restores the clarity characteristic of modernism. The metal works with restraint here: it does not draw attention to itself but rather supports the facade's plasticity, the rhythm of the loggias, and the gentle curve of the entire volume.
As a result of the renovation, the hotel's recognizable silhouette was preserved while the building was restored to contemporary architectural precision. Light aluminium became the material that linked the building's historic image with the new facade system.
